My dear invisible friends, have you missed me? A lot, I guess...
I finally went to travel again and wow, what an amazing destination I chose... Blackpool! To be honest, wasn't I the one who chose it, it was the man. So it's his fault.
I went to Blackpool a few years back and I had a vague (bad) memory of it, so I tried to warn him... but he didn't want to listen....
We booked train and hotel on the Friday and we left on Saturday... filled with excitement and a very bad back from my side. But hey, who could say no to the seaside?
The trip by train lasted around 2 hours, it wasn't too bad... the view from the window was quite interesting, let's say, a lot of countryside.
But hey who cares, let's get to the point. We got to Blackpool.
The weather wasn't too bad, to be honest, but there were no cashpoints at the train station...and that instantly pissed me off; secondly, you had to pay £1 for a map. For a map of Blackpool? yeah whatever... luckily Alex had google maps on his phone so we somehow located the hotel. We decided to walk there, because taxi are just too expensive. So we embarked in a very very long walk...
Down the road towards the beach... and oh my Guinness, the real soul of Blackpool started to show off. The type of locals available gave us a hint of the people who would enjoy staying here... and we started regretting our holiday choice! Night clubs, karaoke, dodgy looking pubs... OK, let's keep walking towards the beach... step by step, don't look around just in front of you...
the beach was actually good, honestly. I was surprised. it's very wide and clean, even if covered by donkey shit... but hey, children like donkey. The sea is another story... and that's when you understand why they called it Blackpool!!! Happy days...
So we started walking along the seaside, trying not too look on the left (the beach was on our right): Blackpool seafront is a cauldron of horrible buildings probably built in the 50s and then forgotten... the deco is absolutely revolting and the use of flashing neon's really doesn't help. all you see is arcades, sad nightclubs and bingo... oh gosh... why are we here? Oh yes, and fish and chips everywhere, obviously!!! The sadness of the place is overwhelming... I wanted to set it on fire and start rebuilding it all over again...
To not talk about the people enjoying Blackpool... big families on benefits taking the kids to arcades spending all of their money on silly machines... teenagers outs there to pull and get drunk... hen and stag parties were probably the happier sight, together with the tranquil elderly walking down the promenade and playing bingo.
We finally got to the hotel, still a bit shocked, and we decided to stay in there for a couple of hours, mainly to recover from what we saw. But then we decided to be brave and go out again. Come on, we can do it! So we left the safety of our cute green room and we slowly walked back to the promenade.... and we stopped at a Wetherspoon for a drink... Dutch courage, maybe??? But we needed it. The place was a bit scary but the beer was very good.
Then we decided to try the piers. There are 3 in Blackpool, all with funfairs on them. We got to the central one, mainly because of the panoramic wheel. And yes, that was cool! We were lucky enough to get on it on time for sunset and the view was absolutely amazing! yeah, that was good! even if Alex was scared to death... fear of heights... ehhehehe
And then I've even got doughnuts, freshly made! 5 for £2! oh yes, that was great... at least something positive... unfortunately, it was going to be the only positive thing...
We kept walking along the seaside, looking at sea, trying not too look at the seafront... but it was too mesmerizing to resist. Night was falling and a parade of strange people started to come out from their dwellings... oh my Guinness! All stuck in the same period as the buildings, I'd say... how weird... it was actually funny to witness all these strange people walking around... and all displaying the same fashion trend: cover yourself in glue and jump in the wardrobe... ready to go out! :D
After walking walking and taking in so many crazy people, we started feeling hungry and we decide to look for somewhere to eat. Yeah, good luck... the only places you could choose from were fish and chips and kebabs. Oh gosh... we decided to try walking into the city, away from the seaside... fish and chips, fish and chips, fish and chips... and then, we found Pizza Hut and Nandos. Oh well... surprisingly they were both mega full, so we ended up in a nearby pub drinking beer and feeling slightly miserable... must have been the atmosphere of the place!!! ':/
But hunger took over, so we ended up in pizza hut... still wondering why we made the effort of getting changed before going out...
With our doggy bag we slowly walked back to the hotel, admiring the world famous Blackpool Lights... the tackiest thing in the universe... so depressing and pathetic!!! Somebody burn down that place, please.... :'''(
We finally got back to the hotel, safe and sound, far away from the promenade and all the rest... scary...
The day after we decided to try the other 2 piers... pretty miserable on a Sunday morning, to be honest... but I got some more doughnuts so I was pretty happy. The last pier was actually the best one, because there was a Victorian arcade! That was fun! :D
Then it started seriously pissing down, so we sat on the pier looking out at the rain and the high tide. The sea was actually amazing, so furious... loved it!!! We had a coffee and then we started wondering again around arcades, mainly coz it was the only dry place... still contemplating the sad people playing in them... bah....
Farewell, Blackpool.... farewell!
